REFLECT
The “A-word.”
As a church musician, when I read a Scripture passage that quotes a text set to music, I have a ‘eureka’ moment, and immediately start to mentally sing the song or hymn.
Today’s Gospel passage from St. Matthew invokes such a moment. I remember the familiar hymn-tune, “Seek Ye First.” But since it is Lent, I can’t plan to use this hymn because it contains the word ‘Alleluia.’ We don’t sing or use this word from our Hebrew tradition in Lent because it is an expression of immense joy, usually translated as ‘Praise the Lord.’ We re-introduce this word into our liturgy at the Easter Vigil with great fanfare.
Although we don’t use the “A-word” we can still celebrate our salvation history, looking forward to Easter joy.
PRAY
“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find;
knock and the door will be opened to you.
For everyone who asks, receives; and the one who seeks, finds;
and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.” - Matthew: 7:7-8
